App iTunes – a Useful and Multifunctional Tool for a Tester

iTunes is a qualitative media player for audio and video files, created by Apple Inc. and which is in free access on Mac OS and Windows.

It also offers personal access to the original online-platform iTunes Store, where one can buy music, films, books, and different apps for the iOS mobile operating system. In addition, it allows moving files from a portable device to the computer and watching a mobile device’s location.


You can download it from the official Apple website.
But this multimedia tool can be used not only for the work with the content. Built-in functionality of iTunes also allows preparing the operational environment for testing.

Basic options are:
• Study the information about the connected device;
• A process of software updating in the iPad/iPhone/iPod system;
• Synchronization of the device with the PC and work with utility crash log files;
• Apps installation, using the utilities with ipa extension (only for iOS).

Study the information about the connected device

Using the available iTunes functionality, one can know all information of interest about connected iOS device: the device model, its serial number, version of the used operating system, internal memory size. In order to know this info, you need to do the following:
• With the help of USB cable, connect the device to PC, where iTunes was installed;
• Open iTunes;
• Double click on the “Select the device” icon.

• Connect iOS device to the personal computer, using a special USB cable;

• Open the Summary tab and click on the “Synchronize” button;

• Right after completing the synchronization, you need to go to the folder C:\Users\current_user_name\AppData\Roaming\Apple Computer\Logs\CrashReporter\MobileDevice and open the folder with mobile device name (for example, iPhone-cda6sd78).

In this folder, there’re all log files of every installed application.

Apps installation, using the utilities with ipa extension (only for iOS)
To install the necessary application, one can use a lot of available variations of quick and qualitative software installation on the mobile device system. When the app is only being developed and it is at the stage of active testing, sometimes there’s no opportunity to upload it to the AppStore, so you need to use other available methods.
For example, you can use the possibility to install it with the help of a utility file with ipa extension. By the way, such a feature set is available only for iTunes version 12.6.3 and below!
For the installation, you have to do the following:
• Connect the iOS device to a personal computer, using a special USB cable;
• Open iTunes;
• Double click on the Select the device icon;
• Open the Summary tab and click on the “Sync” button;
• Open the folder on PC, where there’s a file with ipa extension;
• Open this file via iTunes;
• In iTunes, go to the Apps section;
• Click on the “Install” button opposite the chosen app;
• Click on the Apply button and wait until the installation is completed.
The iTunes app is a very good and high-demand tool in any tester’s toolkit, which allows doing a lot of manipulation with a device and data, which is in its system.
